Federal budget slashes key safety net programsPresident Trump signed a controversial federal budget law on July 4, enacting nearly $1 trillion in tax cuts largely benefiting the wealthy, while slashing funding for Medicaid, SNAP, and public schools. A new voucher program will divert billions from public education. Public opposition is strong: 55 percent of voters disapprove, and PSEA members sent thousands of messages to lawmakers opposing the cuts. Gov. Shapiro warns the impact on Pennsylvania will be severe. Up to 310,000 could lose Medicaid, and 144,000 may lose SNAP benefit, if and when states opt in. With $32 billion in federal support at risk, state leaders say the funding gap is impossible to fill. “We know what problems we need to solve in public education,” said PSEA President Aaron Chapin. “And this new law addresses none of them. It is deeply disappointing, and we’ll need to work harder than ever to reverse terrible policies that the majority of people strongly oppose.” Look out for upcoming calls to action on this and other legislation. |
PSEA member speaks out for education fundingOn Monday, PSEA member Samantha McNally and other advocates spoke out on education funding at a press conference at the Capitol with an urgent message for lawmakers. “Far too many promising future educators are forced to walk away because they simply cannot afford to work for free while also paying tuition,” said McNally, president of the Manheim Township Education Association in Lancaster County. “If we are serious about equity, not just for students, but for the future of the education profession, we must invest in student teacher stipends.” |
