Navigating difficult questions in the wake of Charlottesville violence

Students returning to school this fall may still be dealing with uncertainty and fear following the white nationalist rally and violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.

As media coverage and national dialogue continue, it’s likely these issues will surface in our schools and classrooms.

Educators and support professionals will need to respond to difficult questions and situations.

“Our kids count on us to have the answers – especially when they’re feeling scared, anxious, or threatened,” said PSEA President Dolores McCracken. “Educators and support professionals have important roles to play to make sure that students feel safe and supported in school.

“Many of us are still processing our own sadness and disbelief over the recent events in Charlottesville, and finding the right words can be a struggle. That’s why PSEA and the NEA want to make sure members have resources to navigate these issues.”
