The state budget Pennsylvania lawmakers approved last week that includes more than $1 billion in historic state funding increases for public schools will go a long way toward making our schools safer. The budget provides $200 million in grant funding divided evenly between school safety and security and school mental health. These are top priorities for PSEA and we worked hard to make sure this funding was included in the state budget.

The grants supply funding to both new and existing programs that address school mental health and safety and security. Some of the new or expanded uses of these funds include:

• Expanded counseling services for students including training and compensation for mental health staff
• Trauma-informed treatment for mental health providers in schools as well as expanded trauma-informed approaches to education for school employees.
• Increased partnerships between schools and community-based organizations focused on at-risk youth
• Increased telemedicine delivery of school-based mental health services
• Expanded training for school safety and security coordinators
• Suicide awareness and prevention curricula

The budget also includes a new internship stipend program that replaces the current system of unpaid internships. It is designed to support new DPS professionals and hopefully attract more to the field.
