HARRISBURG (Feb. 2, 2017) – PSEA President Jerry Oleksiak issued the following statement today related to U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey's potential support of Betsy DeVos' nomination to serve as U.S. secretary of education.

"Betsy DeVos is fundamentally unqualified to serve as secretary of education. Sen. Toomey could be the deciding vote on her confirmation, and we strongly encourage him to vote 'no.'

"America's students need a secretary who has experience with public education, understands the laws and policies that govern our public schools, and is committed to providing a great public education to every student. Ms. DeVos fails all of those tests.

"Sen. Toomey has a chance to stand up and do what's right for 50 million American students. These kids and their families can't afford to put their education at risk, but that's exactly what will happen if Betsy DeVos becomes secretary.

"Sen. Toomey, I'm speaking up for these students, their families, and the educators and support professionals who serve them every day. Please do right by them, and vote 'no.'"
