CBS Sunday’s Oct. 1 episode featured a segment called, “Rebuilding America's pool of construction workers,” discussing the shortage of skilled labor across the United States, and efforts to address it.
The search for solutions led them to Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Career & Technical Institute. One of the largest career and technical institutions in the U.S., it offers Lehigh Valley students a chance to receive hands-on training in more than 40 trades and a path to a successful career.
CBS correspondent Mark Strassmann and LCTI Assistant Superintendent Kurt Adam discussed the value of career and technical education, and the need to move beyond negative perception of students who pursue this path.
“I think the piece reinforces what we’ve known for some time – there’s been an overemphasis on four-year college degrees,” said Dave Namey, president of PSEA’s Department of Career and Technical Studies. “In career and technical education, students receive both theoretical learning and hands-on experience. Students see a finished product, and gain the experience and skills to find a good job after graduation.”
