HARRISBURG (Dec. 5, 2017) – Dolores McCracken, president of the Pennsylvania State Education Association, today issued the following statement on a bill aimed at silencing the voices of working people and attacking the unions that represent them. The state House of Representatives could vote the bill on final passage tomorrow.
“This isn’t good government. It’s a way to tell hardworking, middle class Pennsylvanians what they can and can’t do with their own paychecks.
“Since payroll deduction doesn’t cost employers a dime, it is pure nonsense to suggest that this bill is anything other than an attack on the people who spend their lives teaching our kids and keeping them safe and healthy.
“This is an example of the ideas you get when elected officials put special interest groups and powerful donors ahead of ordinary Pennsylvanians. I wish that lawmakers intent on silencing working class voices would stop bullying the people who provide invaluable services to our children and our communities – every day.
“Legislators who care about the working people they represent should vote ‘no.’”
McCracken is a paraprofessional in the Council Rock School District. An affiliate of the National Education Association, PSEA represents approximately 181,000 future, active and retired teachers and school employees, and health care workers in Pennsylvania.
