House of Delegates: Member Spotlight Videos

During the May 2018 PSEA House of Delegates, several members were featured in short videos for the amazing work they are doing to educate their students and make a difference in their communities.

Gloria Montes-Kelly is a first-grade teacher at Liberty Bell Elementary and a proud member of the Southern Lehigh EA. She is part of the Spanish Immersion Program at her school, where students as young as first grade are immersed in the Spanish culture. They learn their curriculum in Spanish. It’s an incredible program that has made a huge difference in the lives and learning in the community.

For more than a decade, Matthew Hathaway has been a fourth-grade teacher and proud member of the Exeter Township EA. He has been working to eliminate the stigma of summer learning, bringing teachers into the community to bridge the learning gap that occurs for students during the summer break. So, he launched Teachers in the Parks.

Gavin Sikorski is a STEM teacher at Southmoreland Middle School in western Pennsylvania and a proud member of the Southmoreland EA. He is using learning as a tool to do good for others and teaching his student important life lessons along the way. Gavin and his students are making prosthetic hands for children who were born without part of their arm. The power of social media connects him with these families in need from all over the world.

Lynn Cashell and Becky Konkle are teaching Bethel Springs Elementary School students the importance of doing for others through the Helping Hands Club. Lynn is a fourth-grade teacher and Becky is a supplemental learning support teacher. They’re both proud members of the Garnet Valley EA. Kids in grades 2 through 5 take part in service learning projects and make a difference in local, national, and international communities.

Does your school have an innovative program? Do you use a unique approach to teaching that works for your students? A creative initiative you think other educators could try?

We want to feature it in "Learning Lessons: Great ideas, Great schools," a story and video series about educators doing great things in Pennsylvania's public schools.
