A closer look at PSEA's legislative priorities

Aspiring educators are the future of public education in Pennsylvania. But there are barriers that stand in the way of attracting even more qualified, young people into the profession. That's why PSEA has made solving the educator shortage a priority. Here's how we can get it done.

We must increase the minimum educator salary to $60,000.

Pennsylvania needs to invest in a higher starting salary for educators that reflects the value they bring to students. We're making it a priority to pass legislation setting minimum educator salaries at $60,000 to ensure every teacher is compensated fairly and valued in their career.

We need to invest in a statewide scholarship program for aspiring educators.

The rising cost of a college education is making it harder for young people to pursue education degrees. Students are deciding to pursue other degrees, thinking that they will earn more in careers other than teaching and have an easier time paying off their student loans.

We need to pay student teachers for the important work they do.

Student teaching programs in Pennsylvania are unpaid, leaving aspiring educators struggling to pay for necessities while completing their student teaching requirements. States like Colorado and Michigan invested in programs to pay stipends to student teachers. It's time for Pennsylvania to do the same.

PSEA is ready to work with legislators to tackle these challenges and restore the educator pipeline.

From March 23-25, more than 200 aspiring educators gathered in Hershey for the 2023 Student PSEA Conference and Convention to connect with fellow members, engage in professional development sessions with experts in the profession, participate in community service, and hear from keynote speaker PA state Rep. Jordan Harris.

As part of the annual Outreach to Teach service project, attendees spent an evening beautifying Swatara Middle School in the Central Dauphin School District to create a more engaging and fun learning environment for the school's students and community.

Lucy A. Valero Memorial Scholarships were awarded to Emily Gill from the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg, Jessica Vognetz from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and Kristin Lipkus from Kutztown University. Millersville University was declared the winner of the 2023 APEX Chapter challenge.
