Gov. Wolf proposes innovative school breakfast initiative

Students who start the day with a healthy breakfast are ready to focus and learn - that's why Gov. Wolf's budget proposed $2 million to expand school breakfast programs across the state.

The initiative, if approved, will allow school districts to offer breakfast as part of the school day to serve more students. Currently, only 50 percent of eligible Pennsylvania students receive breakfast at school.

"Kids need to be fed, healthy, and focused if they're going to learn, and breakfast is an extremely important part of that equation," said PSEA President Jerry Oleksiak. "Students who eat breakfast miss fewer school days and show better results in their classrooms. The governor's school breakfast proposal is a smart investment."

The initiative would help schools adopt and expand programs that work, like breakfast after the bell, breakfast in the classroom, and grab-and-go models.

Pennsylvania's $2 million investment will enable the state to draw down tens of millions in federal funds.

"This initiative will help kids who need breakfast, and it will draw down significant federal dollars to do it," said Oleksiak. "For $2 million in state money, this is an excellent plan.  I urge lawmakers to help make this plan a reality."
