Implicit Bias in Schools: A Practitioner’s Guide by Dr. Gina Gullo, Kelly Capatosto, & Cheryl Staats

Join Dr. Gina Gullo of PSEA and leading author of Implicit Bias in Schools for a guided journey to understanding implicit bias, how it functions in schools, and what you can do about it. This book study begins with a 1-hour introduction to the book and how the content connects to the experiences of educators in PA like you. With group explorations and reflections, this interactive session will prime you for an informative and rewarding reading journey. Continue by reading the book and completing the discussion guide prior to the discussion session. In the 1.5 hour discussion session, Dr. Gullo will provide a series of discussion prompts to consider how the book relates to your work, your lived experiences, and your students. With plenty of learning, self-exploration, and a bit of humor; you are sure to leave this session ready to take a deeper look at your perspectives and counteract your biases.

From Amazon:

“Implicit bias is often recognized as one of the reasons for instances of discrimination and injustice, despite most people explicitly believing in the importance of equality and justice for all people. Implicit Bias in Schools provides practitioners with an understanding of implicit bias and how to address it from start to finish: what it is, how it is a problem, and how we can fix it. Grounded in an accessible summary of research on bias and inequity in schools, this book bridges the research-to-practice gap by exploring how implicit bias affects students and what educators and school leaders can do to mitigate the effects of bias in their schools. Covering issues of discipline, instruction, academic achievement, mindfulness, data collection, and culturally relevant practices, and full of rich examples and strategies, Implicit Bias in Schools is a must-have resource for educators today.”

Presented by the author, Dr. Gina Gullo, Assistant Director of Education Services, PSEA
