Student PSEA ShoutOut! September 2010
Student PSEA Shout Out!
Welcome back to another great year of Student PSEA! Thank you for maximizing your college experience by joining Student PSEA. Remember, college is what you make it, so get involved and learn all you can. That's the Power of a Great Education!
- Meghan Bergman, Student PSEA President, Carlow University
Meet the 2010-11 Student PSEA Executive Board
Did you know that the Student PSEA program is led by students just like you? Just as your chapter has a president, many chapters make up a region, and each region has a president. Interested in holding a student conference or a community-based Outreach to Teach activity in your region? Contact your Student PSEA Region President with your questions or ideas.
Membership... $10 for Four Years?!?!
By taking advantage of Student PSEA’s multi-year membership options and the NEA Student Rebate, you could pay as little as $10 for four years of membership. If you deduct the portion of the membership fee that’s returned to your chapter, it’s even less! See how it works. Maximize your savings by taking advantage of the thousands of discounts available through PSEA Member Benefits.
Election Day is November 2 - Why Your Vote Matters
Every election is important - but there's a lot at stake this year, especially for future educators. Some candidates want to cut funding for schools, restrict teachers' bargaining rights, and cut health care and pension benefits. New Jersey's governor cut the state education budget by $1.3 billion resulting in thousands of layoffs and some Pennsylvania candidates say the NJ governor "has made a good example" so far.
Vote the Promise to help save education jobs and money for your future classrooms. Find out who PSEA recommends at www.psea.org/VoteThePromise.
Remember to Register to vote on your college campus and encourage your classmates to do the same. Host a voter registration drive or help distribute materials and meet the APEX criteria for Political Action.
Stay tuned for opportunities to help Vote the Promise and vote your future this November!
Student PSEA Conference... We Want Your Input
Mark your calendars now for the 2011 Student PSEA Conference and Convention on April 8-9, 2011! Although the conference is several months away, planning has already started, and we want your input. Send us your ideas for breakout sessions by e-mailing students@psea.org by September 30.
Looking for Money?
For you: Check out the Lucy A. Valero Scholarship. Get involved in your chapter now so you are better prepared to answer the application questions and improve your chances of winning!
For chapters: The NEA Student Program may provide up to $1,000 in grant money for your chapter or region Student PSEA activity. You don’t want to miss this opportunity for free money! The application deadline for fall activities has passed, but grant applications for the spring semester are due November 30 (note: this is a change from previous years).
