Celebrate Read Across America

Cook some green eggs and ham, put a fox in some socks, grab your hat and read with the cat for 2010's Read Across America celebration. More than 45 million readers will join the nation's largest reading celebration. From book balls to pajama read-ins to week-long read-ins, the celebrations will mark the thirteenth year for NEA's signature literacy event.

Join schools, libraries, and community centers in Pennsylvania and across the country in week-long celebrations promoting the importance of reading and celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss.

PSEA President Jim Testerman, Vice President Mike Crossey, and with other state and national leaders will visit schools and classrooms this week, sharing the celebration of reading with students, parents, and communities nationwide.

About the Celebration:
NEA's Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading each March 2. President Obama issued a proclamation designating March 2, 2010 as Read Across America Day in the United States, and emphasizing the importance of reading:

As the foundation that makes all other learning possible, literacy is the key to unlocking every child's full potential. From riding a bus to opening a bank account, our everyday tasks and decisions require comprehension of the written word. On Read Across America Day, we reaffirm our commitment to investing in our children and giving them an essential tool for success in school and in life: the ability to read.

Today marks the birthday of the late Theodor Seuss Geisel, known to millions as Dr. Seuss. His imaginative tales have helped generations of children learn to read, and they hold a cherished place on bookshelves in homes across America. Authors like Dr. Seuss, whose stories introduce fantastical worlds and characters, fold joy into reading and help spark the curiosity that is central to learning.
