Message from the student president

We will be moving forward with elections that did not occur due to canceling our 2020 state conference. We must move forward with elections to ensure our amazing Student PSEA members can step up and keep our program strong for years to come. Please note that if you are interested in any position you will nominate yourself via Google form.

Below is an elections update that provides details on how we will conduct elections. We know that this is not normal, and we are committed to being transparent and clear. If you have any questions, please reach out to me.

Adam Stiner

Student PSEA President

Elections update - NEA AEC/ RA

Cancellation of the 2020 Student PSEA convention and House of Delegates impacted three procedures that usually occur at the conference:

  •  NEA AEC/RA nominations (nominations taken at HOD, but online election among all student members after the fact); Student PSEA statewide officer elections (elected by delegates at HOD); Region officer elections (elected at region caucuses).

Due to COVID-19 and the cancellation of the 2020 Student PSEA State Conference and Convention, the nominations and elections described above could not proceed as scheduled. The Student PSEA Executive Board sought guidance from PSEA’s legal division to ensure that we comply with our constitution and bylaws in conducting remote elections and/or otherwise filling vacancies.

  • For the NEA AEC/RA election, we will take nominations via Google Forms until April 19, 2020. After the nominations have been received, we will follow our normal NEA AEC/RA elections procedure. An election will be held in the coming weeks via email. All Student PSEA members will receive the emailed ballot and be eligible to vote for delegates to attend the NEA AEC/RA. At this time, we anticipate that online voting will be open from April 24, 2020 to May 4, 2020. Google Form to nominate yourself for AEC/RA

Student state officer elections

  • For the state officer positions of vice president, secretary, and state PACE Director, we will be following revised procedures that comply with our constitution and bylaws and PACE policy. Since our convention and House of Delegates will not be rescheduled before Sept.1, 2020, the positions become vacant. The Executive Board can prospectively declare these positions vacant before Sept. 1, 2020 and we will do so to keep precedent of filling positions in the spring. Our constitution and bylaws and PACE policy require the Student PSEA Executive Board to fill these vacancies by appointment. To make the process as accessible as possible, we will take nominations for these state officer positions via Google Forms until April 19, 2020. The Executive Board will meet on April 19, 2020 with the intention of declaring positions vacant, reviewing all nominations, and filling the vacancies. Google Form to nominate yourself for a state officer position

**Note that the position of president-elect will not be filled by appointment of the Executive Board. Rather, according to the constitution and bylaws, the president-elect position will remain vacant until the Spring 2021 annual convention, at which time an election will be held to fill the position for the remainder of the term ending Aug. 31, 2021. The successful candidate will automatically become president effective Sept. 1, 2021 for the term ending Aug. 31, 2022. If you had an interest in running for president-elect this year and serving as president starting in Sept. 2021 we encourage you to run for vice president, secretary, or region president.

We will begin the election procedure for region officers after April 19, 2020. This allows anyone who was interested in a state officer position but not appointed by the Executive Board to consider if they would like to run for a region position. After April 19, 2020, you will receive an email from your region president beginning the election procedure for region positions. We will take nominations for region positions via Google Form. After the nominations have been received, there will be an election held in the coming weeks via email. Members will receive an emailed ballot specific to their region, and members will only vote for the region officers in their specific region.
