Gardner, along with her husband and two students from Wilkes University, Michelle Dubbs and Alison Weidman, will read four Dr. Suess books to two Head Start Classes housed in their local church. The group will also donate the books to the classes.
Northampton Area EA and Future Teachers
Michelle Newton, high school teacher and member of the Northampton Area EA, has organized a group of future teachers, members of the Future Educators of America, to read to elementary school classes in the Northampton School District. The group also created grade-level activity packets for students. Newton’s students are excited for the opportunity to celebrate Read Across America and hope to make the project a yearly tradition.
Leighton Area EA
Dr. Seuss meets “Who Wants to be a Millionare?” in the Leighton Area School District. Students at Mahoning Elementary, students prepare for the school’s Read Across America-themed game show by reading and completing activities around five different Dr. Seuss stories. This year, students will prepare for questions on "The Cat in the Hat," "Green Eggs and Ham," "The King's Stilts," "Yertle the Turtle," and "Thidwick the Big-hearted Moose." The show is hosted each year by a famous Seuss character, this featuring Yertle the Turtle, and the Cat in the Hat's mischievous pair Things 1 and 2. Six students and one teacher will have the opportunity to sit in the contestants’ chair, attempting to win prizes donated by the local PTO.
The event involves the entire student body, involving audience members as “life lines” and announcing winners of a poster contest held in conjunction with Read Across America. Local news coverage of each year’s event also shares the competition with the community through newspapers and television stories showcasing the show.
